By now, it has become evident that the internal combustion engine's days are numbered as the preeminent vehicle propulsion source. However, while pure-electric cars are the future of automobility, we likely have a way to go before seeing them take the top spot. In the meantime, hybrid models have become more popular than ever since they offer the best of both worlds. But if electric cars are the future, what are some of the advantages to adopting hybrid and electric technology today. In fact, there are several. Here are a few:
- Lower Environmental Impact: Over its lifespan, from the mining of its raw materials until it is finally scrapped, the average gasoline-powered vehicle is responsible for 52 metric tons of C02. Over the same time period, the average electric vehicle produces around 28 metric tons. Hybrid vehicles fall somewhere in between. Additionally, electric vehicles are still in the early stages, and technology and process advancements are expected to lower that number even further.
- Lower Fuel Expenses: Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid models offer excellent fuel efficiency, with EPA-estimated combined ratings of 55 MPGe for the XC90 midsize SUV to 69 MPGe for the S60 luxury sport sedan; a nice way to reduce the cost of your Walkersville or Buckeystown commute.
- Federal Tax Credits: As of April 2021, Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid models are eligible for a federal tax credit of up to $5,419. And the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 pure-electric crossover could earn you a credit of $7,500.
- Maryland Rebate for Charging Equipment: Maryland's electric vehicle rebate may have ended, but the state still offers assistance towards electric vehicle ownership. The Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) Rebate program offers rebates of up to $700 for individuals or $4,000 for businesses to help defray the cost of charging equipment and installation.
- Use the Fast Lane: Plug-in vehicles are allowed to use the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, no matter how many people are in the car. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration issues a special permit to display on the vehicle for access.
- Home Utility Incentives: EV Driven by Potomac Edison offers residential customers a 300 rebate for the purchase and installation of a qualified Level 2 charging station. Additionally, with the Off-Peak Rewards program, you can earn $0.02 per kWh for net off-peak charging usage between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. and on weekends.
