Volvo's reputation for safety has a long history, going back to 1927 when the Swedish automaker added safety to its core values. It has been a defining characteristic of the brand ever since.

A milestone in Volvo's safety history occurred in the 1950s when Swedish inventor Nils Bohlin revolutionized automotive safety by developing the modern three-point seatbelt for Volvo vehicles. While Volvo received a patent for the design, the company quickly recognized its life-saving implications and freely returned it to the public domain so that all manufacturers could utilize the feature. These seatbelts are now a legal requirement for all vehicles and have helped mitigate the severity of crash injuries worldwide.

Today, Volvo's commitment to safety continues unabated and can be seen in its "safety cage" frame construction and standard IntelliSafe driver-assistance technologies. Regardless of trim level, all Volvo models include driver aids like:

  • Volvo City Safety (forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking)
  • Blind Spot Information System
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Lane Keeping Aid
  • Road Sign Information
  • Automatic high beams

Only Brand with Entire Lineup Achieving 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus

This past April, Volvo became the only brand to achieve 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus status for each one of its vehicles when the XC40 Recharge P8 pure-electric crossover earned the designation. The XC40 Recharge is also the first fully electric small SUV to earn the recognition, growing Volvo's record as the automaker with the most single-year TSP+ awards since the recognition was introduced in 2013.

“Regardless of body style, engine or trim, every Volvo offers innovative protection in a crash.” said Anders Gustafsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car USA. “We are proud that IIHS has recognized this by awarding a Top Safety Pick Plus to every vehicle we produce today. No other company has been awarded this honor across all carlines in 2021.”
