Volvo has given itself a couple of lofty goals to achieve in the next four years. Perhaps the most prominent objective is to offer a lineup that is 50% hybrid and 50% electric by 2025. And with their current and expanding lineup of Recharge pure electric and Recharge plug-in hybrid cars and SUVs, the company has certainly hit the ground running.

But Volvo's focus on electrification is about more than delivering quieter and more responsive performance. It's also about helping preserve the future for later generations, which is why Volvo is also looking to achieve a climate-neutral manufacturing network by 2025. And late last month, the Swedish automaker made a big step toward its ambitious goal, announcing that its Torslanda site in Sweden has obtained fully climate-neutral status.

The Torslanda site is the company's first car manufacturing plan and second plant overall to accomplish this feat, after its Skövde engine plant in Sweden, which achieved climate-neutral status in 2018.

According to Volvo Cars, a fully climate-neutral site is one that "registers no net increase in the emission of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere as a result of the electricity and heating used by the plant." The Torslanda plant has been powered by climate-neutral electricity for more than 12 years. And now, it has climate-neutral heating, with half of the heat coming from biogas and the other half sourced through industrial waste heat.

But improvements at the Torslanda site aren't finished yet, as Volvo has additional efficiency plans in the works, which should save around 20,000 MWh annually by 2023.

“Establishing Torslanda as our first climate neutral car plant is a significant milestone,” said Javier Varela, head of industrial operations and quality at Volvo Cars. “We are committed to having a climate neutral manufacturing network by 2025 and this achievement is a sign of our determination as we consistently work to reduce our impact on the environment.”
