Volvo XC40
The smaller of Volvo's two compact crossovers, the Volvo XC40 offers the convenience and practicality of a utility vehicle while maintaining an easily manageable physical footprint. Smaller proportions enable the XC40 to nimbly navigate crowded streets and parking lots. It's an ideal choice if you're looking for a luxury SUV with modest space requirements and more car-like handling.
Though compact on the outside, the XC40 offers very usable space inside. The cabin can comfortably seat up to five riders, with 21 cubic feet to spare behind the second row. And, if you have some bigger errands to run, the 60/40-split rear seats fold down, expanding available cargo room to 47.2 cubic feet.
The XC40 offers three powertrains options:
- T4: The XC40's base powertrain features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that sends 187 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
- T5: If you'd like a little more internal motivation for your Ijamsville commute, T5 models equip a higher-output version of the same engine that generates 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel-drive comes standard.

XC40 Recharge
While the internal combustion engine isn't going anywhere soon, the future of automobility is clearly electric, and Volvo stands ready to lead the way. As the company's first-ever fully electric production vehicle, the XC40 Recharge P8 is a major step towards Volvo's goal of a 50% electric lineup by 2025.
The XC40 Recharge equips a 75 kWh lithium-ion battery pack powering a pair of electric motors, one for each axle. Altogether, the system generates a mountainous 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque, good for a Volvo-stated 0-60 time of just 4.7 seconds. The XC40 Recharge can travel more than 200 miles on a single charge. And with a 150-kW D/C fast charger, a depleted battery can be filled to 80-percent in only 40 minutes.
Volvo XC60
If you're looking for a little more passenger and cargo volume while maintaining easy-to-maneuver exterior dimensions, consider the Volvo XC60. The larger of Volvo's two compact crossovers, the XC60 offers roomier accommodations, an extra powertrain option, and a longer list of standard and available amenities. With all five seats in use, XC60 provides 30 cubic feet for your luggage, groceries, or other errands. And when you need to prioritize cargo space, the second-row folds down to expand capacity to 64.4 cubic feet. The XC60 also adds a few extra driver-aids to the base Momentum trim level.
Three powertrains are available, all featuring an eight-speed automatic transmission:
- T5: Standard power for the XC60 comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that transmits 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels. For enhanced traction and control, all-wheel drive is available as an option.
- T6: For Buckeystown shoppers who'd like something even more energetic, the T6 adds a supercharger to the mix, boosting output to 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive is standard.
- Recharge: Previously known as the T8, this plug-in hybrid power train bolsters the T6's twincharged power train with a pair of rear-axle electric motors, for a total output of 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive is standard.

Volvo XC90
The XC90 mid-size luxury crossover is the largest SUV in the lineup and Volvo's flagship model. With seating for up to seven occupants and a full suite of IntelliSafe driver-assistance technologies as standard equipment, it's ideal for discerning larger families in Middletown, MD, or for luxury-minded shoppers who just want the convenience of increased cargo room. It features the same three powertrains as the XC60, and the rear two rows can be folded in several configurations for up to 85.7 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity. If your Frederick family doesn't require the additional seatbelt, available captain chairs provide more personal space in the second row and improved ease-of-access to the third row.
